WASHINGTON, D.C.- April 23rd, 2025 - Our nation witnessed yet another tragedy: at least two people were killed and six others injured in a shooting at Florida State University. We mourn the lives lost, stand in solidarity with the injured, and grieve with the entire FSU community. We are devastated but we are not shocked. Once again, young people were gunned down in a place meant for learning, growth, and hope. Once again, we are writing a statement of heartbreak instead of celebrating students' achievements. And once again, Congress and state legislatures refuse to act. Even in the aftermath of this tragedy, the Florida Senate is preparing to vote on lowering the legal age to purchase a firearm from 21 to 18, reversing a key protection passed after the Parkland shooting. Rather than learning from the past, our leaders are paving the way for more pain, more funerals, and more stolen futures.

Details are still unfolding, but what is clear is that our leaders' inaction is costing lives. Thoughts and prayers are not enough when young Americans continue to die in their classrooms, dormitories, and libraries. "We join College Democrats of America in resolving that no student should experience fear like—not at FSU, not anywhere," said College Democrats at FSU. "We are tired of our schools being defined by the tragedy of gun violence. We are tired of our cries falling on the deaf ears of Republican politicians both in DC, and a mile away from our campus, where state lawmakers are still trying to pass a bill that would put guns in the hands of 18 year olds, repealing legislation that passed after Parkland. This is not normal; this is not acceptable." The College Democrats of America call on Congress to finally pass comprehensive gun reform. We demand universal background checks, red flag laws, an assault weapons ban, and meaningful investments in mental health resources. Every day of delay is another gamble with students' lives. To the students, faculty, and families affected, we grieve with you. We honor the memory of those lost by demanding a future where no student fears being shot on campus. Enough is enough.
